About Our Book Club

Our book club is in it's 10th year!!! I can hardly believe it. What's even more amazing is that we have read just over 80 books!  Our book club began in December 2004 with our very first book, Inside the Kingdom.  It was an evening gathering of 5 people who sat around a living room table to discuss the book, drink some wine, and eat some appetizers.  Today book club is around a Dining Room table with 8 members who although we do discuss the book, we are more excited to be together and enjoy some delicious food.  It seems that as the years go on and on we have come away from being strangers with only the book in common to talk about. Maybe this is why it is so hard to actually talk about the book when we would rather use our few hours a month to talk about the things that matter to us most and dare I say it-school.  Meeting up for a pot luck dinner and talking about our lives, troubles, and thrills has become just as important as reading and discussing our monthly book choice.

In the past ten years we have had some new members come, some old members leave, but in the end we are thankful to have each other and our once a month escape from the lives that each of us live.

Here is a list of our current members:

Christina S.   I have to admit I am obsessed with recording details in a little notebook for no real reason?? Same reason I am doing this blog.

Stavra   The only non-teacher in the group, who may or may not get aggravated by all of our school talk but she puts up with it anyway.  Also, she has stellar attendance!

Sarah Always a treat when Sarah can sneak away from her busy life of mom to twins and a baby boy :)

Tara We love Tara's contribution to book discussion. She always adds very thoughtful insights on moral issues, being a better parent, wife, sister, daughter, and friend.

Christine S. Notorious for reading the book in the car on her way to book club. Don't be fooled, she is amazing at inferring the meaning of a text.

Jeanne  Always has great suggestions for future reads from Aunt Vi. She brings a smile to each meeting especially the time she read a different book from everyone else. Also, She brings great desserts!

Christine P.   We are so thankful for Teenie being in book club because she appreciates the beauty in everything so much that sometimes it makes her tear up.

Des   The only High School English teacher in the group.  She is used to reading books for their literary value and thankfully doesn't mind that our discussions don't center around text to text, text to world, text to self connections, inferring, summarizing, main idea and details.
